What better place to have Jack Frost nippin’ at your nose than a skating rink or sliding? If your pleasure is casually carving out a figures eight or an impromptu hockey game, lace up your skates and hit the ice. Duluth maintains over 60 rinks plus a speed skating oval.
Grab your sled (or pick one up at a general store or gas station) and pack down a path. Grand Marais has a sliding hill in the Grand Marais Rec Area, just off Hwy 61 in town.
Even if you’re not much of a skater, you can be a spectator. On any given weekend in Duluth you’ll find hockey leagues of all level playing and at Chester Bowl you can watch local youth practice at the speed skating oval.
Noted below are public skating rinks. Most rinks are open midweek afternoons and evenings, and all day weekends. They are free of charge. Those with bathrooms tend to sell refreshments. It is best to bring your own skates, since rentals are far and few between.
