Walk the covered bridge into the campground, wind

your way through, then skirt Lake Superior and climb

to Sweetheart’s Bluff. Feeling invigorated after the

downhill return? Walk or bike the three-mile round-trip

paved Gitchi Gami trail westward out of town to the

cemetery and distant lake views.

DOCKSIDE FISH MARKET

see ad on page 48

THE CHARM OF GRAND MARAIS IS

that it is a village with a lot to do, but you can do

nothing at all. You can go out for coffee, watch waves,

sample fresh fish, shop, browse, walk the beach, find

unique gifts and northwoods apparel, tip back a cold

drink, dine harborside, read a book, relax and slow

down to the local pace.

Just out the front door is the biggest lake in the world

and out back is one of the nation’s finest wilderness

areas. So you can hike, bike, fish, kayak, golf, swim,

canoe, hunt, ski, snowshoe, snowmobile and be plain

adventuresome. Grand Marais was named on of ‘The

16 Best Places to Live in the U.S: 2016 by

Outside

magazine.

Feeling less adventuresome? Be inspired! By the

ever-changing beauty of the lake. By the art being

created around you - Outdoor Painting in late

January, annual Plein Air the month of September,

photographers galore, impromptu painters, knitters,

sculptors, musicians. By the exhibits and works at

local studios and the Johnson Heritage Post [the big

log building on main street]. By the creative culture

manifested throughout the public and private spaces

of the village.

Many visitors are surprised by the variety of goings-

on in Grand Marais. The Arrowhead Center for the

Arts, adjacent to the high school, stages Grand

Marais Playhouse productions and North Shore

Music Association performances throughout the year.

On the harbor, North House Folk School provides a

learning space for traditional arts and crafts and hosts

special events and festivals. That’s in addition to the

town’s Arts Festival, Fisherman’s Picnic and Moose

Madness. Check out local dining establishments for

live music, jazz and open-mic sessions.Tune in to local

radio WTIP [90.7 FM, 91.7 FM Upper Gunflint & 90.1

FM Grand Portage] for details of current countywide

happenings. Or check out the calendar of events on
