Are you adventuresome? Do you love the beauty of nature? The North Shore of Minnesota is known for its stunning landscapes, pristine forests, and roaring waterfalls. From thundering cascades to meandering streams, the North Shore is home to a myriad of waterfalls waiting to be explored.
All of the rivers along the North Shore flow into Lake Superior. You can find almost 20 with a decent drop that are within a few miles of the shore. All of these North Shore waterfalls run during spring (mid-April to early June), fed by snowmelt and spring rains. Waterfalls near Duluth to midway to Canada become smaller as late summer approaches and rains diminish. But from midway up the shore to Canada the rivers are fed by lakes and run throughout the year.
Did you know the highest North Shore waterfall is the High Falls at Pigeon River located in Grand Portage State Park? The falls is on the Piegon River, the international boundary between Canada and Minnesota. It is a great day trip. The drive includes the most rugged scenery of the shore, and many views of Lake Superior. The park has an excellent visitor center, and the trail to the falls is paved.
All eight of the North Shore State Parks have waterfalls! Gooseberry Falls has four impressive falls close to the visitor center. You will hike a bit out of Split Rock Lighthouse park to see the Split Rock falls. Tettegouche showcases four waterfalls from a very short hike to a nice hilly hike. Head into the woods for a loop hike to the Manitou River falls at Crosby Manitou park. Temperance River park offers gorgeside views to falls above and below Highway 61. As the name implies, Cascade River has smaller cascades and a stunning waterfall. Judge Magney park is home to Devil's Kettle. At the top of the Upper Falls, the river splits and half the water disappears into a cauldron. No one has figured out where the water goes. Last and mightiest, is Grand Portage with the High Falls.
As you embark on your journey to explore North Shore MN waterfalls, remember to respect the natural environment and follow Leave No Trace principles to help preserve these natural wonders. Whether you're a nature lover, an outdoor enthusiast, or simply seeking a little adventure and a little calm, visiting these waterfalls is a rewarding experience.
