Draconids Meteor Shower
Draconids Meteor Shower

The Draconids is a minor meteor shower producing only about 10 meteors per hour. It is produced by dust grains left behind by comet 21P Giacobini-Zinner, which was first discovered in 1900. The Draconids is an unusual shower in that the best viewing is in the early evening instead of early morning like most other showers. The shower runs annually from October 6-10 and peaks this year on the the night of the 7th. The second quarter moon will ensure dark skies in the early evening for what should be a good show.

Meteors will radiate from the constellation Draco, but can appear anywhere in the sky.

New Moon Stargazing
New Moon Stargazing

New moon nights – night when the moon is absent from the sky – make for great stargazing.

Here’s a great way to start – look due north after the sun has set and find the Big Dipper constellation [see photo] with its telltale 3-star handle and 4-star dipper.

In the summer, the dipper is at ‘9-o’clock’ and hangs dipper down.
In the autumn, the dipper is at ‘6-o’clock’ with the dipper facing up/handle to the left.
In the winter, the dipper is at ‘3-o’clock’ with the handle hanging down.
In the spring, the dipper is at ’12-o’clock’ with the dipper facing down/handle to the right.

Join us for music at North Shore Winery after your adventure! Listen to some great music after a great day on the North Shore!

Our musician for this week is Billy Johnson who has been described as commitment-free rock and roll. While he’s been moonlighting with George Scott McKelvey in the B-Team, former Hillcats singer, Billy Johnson confirms he belongs on the A list as one of the Twin Cities’ best feel-good, blue collar barroom-rousing tunesmiths with his first solo album, tellingly titled, “It’s a Good Life.”

Gales of November
Gales of November

The highest recorded wave on Lake Superior is 28.8 feet while the unofficial wave height is believed to be over 40 feet. Nor’easters – strong winds out of the northeast – catapult down the lake, making for amazing wave watching. This is the time of year when the thousand-foot iron or ships hug the shore, try to avoid the worst of lake conditions. November is historically the worst month for shipwrecks.
