Deer Impact Study - Get involved

Sugarloaf Cove Nature Center | Schroeder Minnesota

Are you interested in deer? Come learn more about the impacts of deer in Minnesota and help researchers at the University of Minnesota monitor the impacts of deer on vegetation. In this session you will get the training you need to become a citizen scientist volunteer for the AVID (Assessing Vegetative Impacts by Deer) program in Minnesota. You will learn how to recognize signs of deer impacts in your woodlands, how to identify the vegetation deer like to eat, and how to measure tree seedlings and submit your data. Following the session you will have the tools you need to get started collecting data.

This program is perfect for woodland owners, naturalists, and others with a basic knowledge of trees and plant identification.

Falcons and other birds: a photography workshop

9am – noon :: Ryan Pennesi, noted North Shore wildlife photographer, wildlife biologist, and naturalist will guide participants on a bird-focused wildlife photography workshop, including the opportunity to photograph perched, captive falcons in a natural setting.

To register, email your contact info to Photography equipment not provided.

Thirty Years of Peregrines

1 – 3 pm :: It’s a well-known story; peregrine falcons were essentially exterminated from the wild due to the lingering effects of the popular and effective insecticide, DDT. Using captive birds as rearing stock, chicks were incubated and raised by people on wild cliffs in order to restock the wild population.

Thirty years ago, the first wild pair of peregrine falcons, post-recovery, built a nest and reared their young. This occurred on Palisade Head in Tettegouche State Park and marked the beginning of the recovery of this iconic aerial predator.

Join Jackie Fallon of the Midwest Peregrine Society, and other guest speakers, as they share data, stories, and photos of the peregrine falcons that have called the cliffs of the North Shore, home.

There will be kids’ activities, live falcons, and more.
