North Shore Calendar of Events

Each small town celebrates nature, arts and history, the great outdoors, local and regional talents, holidays and community. And you’re invited to join in. This North Shore Calendar of Events lists all kinds of goings-on; guided hikes, 99-mile bike races, fine art exhibits, pie-eating contests, solstice celebrations, historical talks, workshops, classes, summer festivals, small town parades, and the annual lighting of Split Rock Lighthouse.

North House was founded in 1997 by a small handful of inspired locals passionate about traditional craft and cooperative learning. Our mission is to enrich lives and build community by teaching traditional northern crafts in a student-centered learning environment that inspires the hands, the heart and the mind.

June courses include sailing, canoe repair, tool-making, paddle making, knitting, needle felting, sausage making, fly fishing, bark weaving, shoemaking, growing medicinal permaculture, forge work, wooden spoon carving, cedar-strip boat construction, kayak building, Swedish Folk painting wax casting, sewing, weaving and carving.

“Photography at the Rock,” a rotating monthly photography show in the lobby of the visitor center at Split Rock Lighthouse, showcases landscape and wildlife photographers of the area.

Our featured photographer for the month of June is Steve Simmer, a natural resource professional and outdoor photographer based out of the Twin Cities.

Meet Steve and talk with him about his work and approach on Saturdays and Sundays, 10am-6pm, June 4, 5, 11, 12, 18 & 19.

The flagship of the Grand Marais Harbor, Hjørdis shares the name of the mythical Norse goddess of war. Take a trip on this 50’ traditionally-rigged steel schooner and gain access to both the largest lake in the world and experience Grand Marais as it was approached in the centuries before Highway 61 — from the water.

Sails will be approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes at 10am, 1pm and 3pm
Sunset sails are approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Superior Hiking Trailhead | Silver Bay MN

The Superior Hiking Trail’s Bean and Bear Lakes overlook, is being rerouted to higher and drier ground to protect and make this stretch of trail more sustainable and hiker friendly. We are in need of 150 volunteers during the two-week project.

The Superior Hiking Trail is an incredible community asset that has connected hundreds of thousands of people to the North Shore. The trail bolsters the quality of life for locals and plays a vital role in the regional recreational tourism.

A family-friendly beer fest – you bet. For a small fee, kids can partake in supervised games, activities, and their own Root Beer tasting contest during the Hopped Up event.

Bring your dancing shoes, and start practicing your favorite songs in the shower. This year we’ve got Sony recording artist Michael Shynes playing Friday night, LIVE BAND Karaoke after the beer fest. You haven’t done karaoke until you’ve sung with a live band.

Event includes Crafting in the public commons, Wooden Boat Display, Family Drop-In Crafts, Boats-to-Tools Auction, Pie Social, Chowder, and the Solstice Pageant.

Split Rock Lighthouse | Two Harbors MN

Have you ever seen a photo of Split Rock Lighthouse and wondered where that was taken? The Grand Views Tour will show you some of the best spots within the historic site and Split Rock Lighthouse State Park to capture the iconic lighthouse.

This two and half hour guided hike also shares stories about life at the station and the relationship Split Rock had with the surrounding area. Be sure to pack a snack and water! This tour is considered moderate in difficulty and involves uneven terrain and elevation changes.
