North Shore Calendar of Events

Each small town celebrates nature, arts and history, the great outdoors, local and regional talents, holidays and community. And you’re invited to join in. This North Shore Calendar of Events lists all kinds of goings-on; guided hikes, 99-mile bike races, fine art exhibits, pie-eating contests, solstice celebrations, historical talks, workshops, classes, summer festivals, small town parades, and the annual lighting of Split Rock Lighthouse.

For this exhibit, the National Park Service (NPS) has gathered works in their collection, along with works and artifacts from private collections, to curate the exhibition.

North House was founded in 1997 by a small handful of inspired locals passionate about traditional craft and cooperative learning. Our mission is to enrich lives and build community by teaching traditional northern crafts in a student-centered learning environment that inspires the hands, the heart and the mind.

June courses include sailing, canoe repair, tool-making, paddle making, knitting, needle felting, sausage making, fly fishing, bark weaving, shoemaking, growing medicinal permaculture, forge work, wooden spoon carving, cedar-strip boat construction, kayak building, Swedish Folk painting wax casting, sewing, weaving and carving.

“Photography at the Rock,” a rotating monthly photography show in the lobby of the visitor center at Split Rock Lighthouse, showcases landscape and wildlife photographers of the area.

Our featured photographer for the month of June is Steve Simmer, a natural resource professional and outdoor photographer based out of the Twin Cities.

Meet Steve and talk with him about his work and approach on Saturdays and Sundays, 10am-6pm, June 4, 5, 11, 12, 18 & 19.

The flagship of the Grand Marais Harbor, Hjørdis shares the name of the mythical Norse goddess of war. Take a trip on this 50’ traditionally-rigged steel schooner and gain access to both the largest lake in the world and experience Grand Marais as it was approached in the centuries before Highway 61 — from the water.

Sails will be approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes at 10am, 1pm and 3pm
Sunset sails are approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Bean and Bear Reroute Volunteer Project

Superior Hiking Trailhead | Silver Bay MN

The Superior Hiking Trail’s Bean and Bear Lakes overlook, is being rerouted to higher and drier ground to protect and make this stretch of trail more sustainable and hiker friendly. We are in need of 150 volunteers during the two-week project.

The Superior Hiking Trail is an incredible community asset that has connected hundreds of thousands of people to the North Shore. The trail bolsters the quality of life for locals and plays a vital role in the regional recreational tourism.

Hedstrom Lumber Company | Grand Marais MN

Sawmill tours are held twice a week during the summer tourist season. These tours are led by the interpreters of the US Forest Service. Learn about the history of our hundred-year-old sawmill, timber harvesting, sawmill processing, lumber products, and byproducts as you wander through a tour of the biggest hands-on sawmill in Minnesota, watching the lumber be processed, seeing employees in action, and getting an eyeful of our complex (and sometimes vintage) machinery!

Tours are free of charge, but require a reservation.

COMPAS Teaching Artists Afoutayi Dance, Music and Arts company produces high quality events dedicated to promoting knowledge and understanding of Haitian culture, history and traditional arts. Dance connects the Haitian people to their spiritual and cultural heritage, having been passed down through lineages of African and Indigenous ancestry. This hour-long performance is a vibrant educational tool filled with dance, music, drumming, storytelling and history and presents Haitian cultural heritage with songs in Creole and French languages with live drumming accompaniment. Participants will learn about Haitian culture through dance as the dancers engage in a playful, spontaneous interchange with the audience.
Feel free to bring a lawn chair or picnic blanket; we will have some to share. In case of inclement weather, the event will happen in the Library’s meeting room
This program, sponsored by Arrowhead Library System, was funded in part or in whole with money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund (ACFH) and by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the ACHF.
