Photographer biography: Roxanne Distad
Distad’s journey into photography blossomed when she received a Kodak Brownie camera for her 12th birthday. She spent many summer nights during her high school years road tripping and discovering the western half of the United States.

Her passion for photography has spanned many years and many cameras, from film to digital. She wants her images to transport you into the very moment she captured them, so you may also experience the magic, beauty, and mystery that embraces Lake Superior and the North Shore.

North Shore Readers & Writers NonFest
North Shore Readers & Writers NonFest

Grand Marais Art Colony | Grand Marais MN

The North Shore Readers and Writers Festival is a biennial event that locates, celebrates, and fosters the literary arts and engagement with the written word. This event is hosted in partnership with Drury Lane Bookstore and the Grand Marais Public Library.

In 2021 the Festival will become a Fantastic NonFest! Meaning, while we are not planning programming for large, in-person gatherings just yet, we have crafted two educational tracks for writers of all levels to learn from seasoned, published Minnestoa authors. We anticipate hosting classes in person.

Classes are 2 – 4 days in length and follow either a poetry or a hybrid track. Participants can opt to follow one of the two specific tracks or select from either track to build out their NonFest experience.

Poetry Track
James Cihlar | A Poem’s Progress: Ways to Get from One Line to the Next
Joyce Sutphen | Memory and Poetry
Sun Yung Shin | Poetry and History

Hybrid Track
Diane Wilson | Telling True Stories: Memoir to Novel
Kathryn Savage | Elements of Creative Nonfiction and Memoir
Scott Carpenter | Fiction and Self in Short

Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial Beacon Lighting
Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial Beacon Lighting

Split Rock Lighthouse | Two Harbors MN

This annual event commemorates the sinking of the freighter Edmund Fitzgerald and the loss of her 29 crew members on November 10, 1975. It is also a time to reflect on the memory of all lives lost in Great Lakes shipwrecks.

The lighthouse, fog signal building, and visitor center will be open. Costumed interpreters will greet visitors and provide historic site and shipwreck information. Throughout the afternoon, visitors can view a film about the Edmund Fitzgerald in the visitor center.

At 4:30 pm, the lighthouse will close temporarily while the names of the crew members are read to the tolling of a ship’s bell. Following the ceremony, the beacon will be lit, and the tower will be open again to tour.

Be sure to bring a flashlight or headlamp as the grounds and trails are unlit. The weather is unpredictable, please dress accordingly.

For those unable to attend the event, a portion of the beacon lighting will be streamed live on Facebook and YouTube.

Cost Included with general admission/MNHS members free
