Warmer by the Lake + Sea Smoke Season
Warmer by the Lake + Sea Smoke Season

With an average temp of 42°, Lake Superior acts like a hot water bottle emanating a little warmth up the hillsides. This occurs November through April when daily highs air temps drop below 40°. The warmth sits in the bowl created by the hills. Once you pass the hilltop, temps can drop by 15°.

When very cold winter air meets the relatively warm lake water, fog is created. This fog hovers over the surface and is known as sea smoke. You will most often see sea smoke in January when it is really cold.

Taurids Meteor Shower
Taurids Meteor Shower

The Taurids is a long-running minor meteor shower producing only about 5-10 meteors per hour. It is unusual in that it consists of two separate streams. The first is produced by dust grains left behind by Asteroid 2004 TG10. The second stream is produced by debris left behind by Comet 2P Encke. The shower runs annually from September 7 to December 10. It peaks this year on the the night of November 4. The first quarter moon will block out all but the brightest meteors this year. If you are patient, you may still be able to catch a few good ones. Best viewing will be just after midnight.

Meteors will radiate from the constellation Taurus, but can appear anywhere in the sky.

Inland Lakes Begin Freezing
Inland Lakes Begin Freezing

By the end of the first week of November ice begins to form on inland lake shores. As the month progresses, skim ice thickens and small, shallow lakes become covered. It is not safe to go out on lake ice until it thickens, usually in late December. The ice remains until early May.

Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial Beacon Lighting
Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial Beacon Lighting

Split Rock Lighthouse Historic Site | Two Harbors MN

This annual event commemorates the sinking of the freighter Edmund Fitzgerald and the loss of her 29 crew members on November 10, 1975. It is also a time to reflect on the memory of all lives lost in Great Lakes shipwrecks. The lighthouse, fog signal building and visitor center will be open. Costumed guides will greet visitors and provide historic site and shipwreck information. Throughout the afternoon, visitors can view a film about the Edmund Fitzgerald in the visitor center.

At 4:30 pm, the lighthouse will close temporarily while the names of the crew members are read to the tolling of a ship’s bell and the Naval Hymn is played. Following the ceremony, the beacon will be lit, and the tower will be open again to tour. This is the only opportunity each year when visitors can climb the tower after dark and see the lit beacon.

COST :: Included with site admission/MNHS members free

New Moon Stargazing
New Moon Stargazing

New moon nights – night when the moon is absent from the sky – make for great stargazing.

Here’s a great way to start – look due north after the sun has set and find the Big Dipper constellation [see photo] with its telltale 3-star handle and 4-star dipper.

In the summer, the dipper is at ‘9-o’clock’ and hangs dipper down.
In the autumn, the dipper is at ‘6-o’clock’ with the dipper facing up/handle to the left.
In the winter, the dipper is at ‘3-o’clock’ with the handle hanging down.
In the spring, the dipper is at ’12-o’clock’ with the dipper facing down/handle to the right.

Leonids Meteor Shower
Leonids Meteor Shower

The Leonids is an average shower, producing up to 15 meteors per hour at its peak. This shower is unique in that it has a cyclonic peak about every 33 years where hundreds of meteors per hour can be seen. That last of these occurred in 2001. The Leonids is produced by dust grains left behind by comet Tempel-Tuttle, which was discovered in 1865. The shower runs annually from November 6-30. It peaks this year on the night of the 17th and morning of the 18th. The crescent moon will set early in the evening leaving dark skies for what should be an excellent show.

Meteors will radiate from the constellation Leo, but can appear anywhere in the sky.

Moose Lick Road Salt
Moose Lick Road Salt

When the first snow hits inland roads, they are salted to keep ice from forming. Like many of us, moose crave a little salt. Carefully drive paved roads – like the Gunflint Trail or Minnesota Highway 1 – at dusk [around 4 pm this time of year]. Keep an eye out and be prepared to stop. The same thing happens when temps warm in the spring in mid- to. late-March into April.
