Hanging Folded Bark Baskets: From Tree to Container
The folded bark basket is just as it sounds: a basket made out of a single piece of tree bark, scored along the bottom, folded, and laced up the sides. These baskets are sturdy, versatile, and aesthetic. They can be made from many different types of bark, in many different shapes and sizes. The only tools used are a sturdy knife and an awl (provided), and the project is enjoyable for people of all skill levels. (Under 12 accompanied by an adult.)
In this class, we will begin at the beginning, with the harvesting of materials. We will use bark and roots from the white spruce or balsam fir tree for the basket bases and lashings, and split hazel saplings for the rims. Examples of basket shapes and sizes will be provided for customizing your piece of bark to best fit your basket vision. We will then process the materials into their usable form, including shaping the bark, boiling and peeling the roots, and splitting and carving down the saplings. The class will finish with basket construction, and everyone will leave with a completed basket. Students are encouraged to bring a cord or strap of their liking; some cord will be available as well.
To register for this unique workshop, please email your contact info to kurt.mead@state.mn.us.
